Dr. Ping ChengDr. Ping Cheng, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, retired from UHM in 1994. His career at UHM started in 1970 and he served as the chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department from 1989 until his retirement in 1994. Not one to take it easy in retirement, Cheng moved to Hong Kong where he served as the Head of Mechanical Engineering Department at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1995 to 2002. He is currently at Shanghai Jiao Tong University where he is a full-time professor in School of Mechanical Engineering and the Director of Institute of Engineering Thermophysics. He writes in an email that “I am enjoying good health and am very busy in supervising  a group of 10 PhD students at Shanghai Jiao Tong University on various projects. In addition, I will be chairing the 16th International Heat Transfer Conference to  be held in China (for the first time) this coming August in Beijing, where 2000 heat transfer specialists all over the world will attend. This is the most important event in the field of heat transfer which is held every four years. Each summer, my wife and I visited the Bay Area to see my son and daughter and their families, and also get-together with Prof. Shu Lin and his wife.”
