GRADUATE CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA

****************************************************************************

The graduate construction courses currently available are:
  1. CEE 602 Construction Scheduling
  2. CEE 604 Applied Cost Engineering
  3. CEE 606 Analysis of Construction Operations
  4. CEE 610 Construction Productivity Improvement
  5. CEE 614 Mediation/Alternate Dispute Resolution
  6. CEE 620 Reforming Public Organizations
  7. CEE 672 Project Management Systems
  8. CEE 696 Special Topics
  9. CEE 699 Directed Reading

Courses from other departments can be accepted in lieu of graduate CEE courses in construction upon petition, and within limitations.

The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of 50 semester credits in course work beyond the B.S. degree, 4 credit hours in CE graduate seminars, qualifying and comprehensive examinations, and the defense of a doctoral dissertation.

The M.S. program follows the outline of the Department of Civil Engineering and the Graduate Division.

We offer Plan A (Thesis Option/32 credits) and Plan B (Non-Thesis Options/32 credits).

    PLAN A minimum requirements
  1. 12 credits of construction-related graduate CE or approved graduate courses
  2. 9 credits of electives or upper division CE courses
  3. 9 credits of CE 700
  4. 2 credits of seminars

    PLAN B minimum requirements
  1. 18 credits of construction-related graduate CE or approved graduate courses
  2. 9 credits of electives or upper division CE courses
  3. 3 credits of independent study, CE 699
  4. 2 credits of seminars

The Certificate Program -- started in Spring 1996 -- has the following basic requirements

  1. 9 credits of core graduate construction courses ( CE 699 is included here)
  2. 6 credits of other approved graduate or upper division construction related and curriculum related courses.

The Certificate Program currently requires only 15 credits.

A project report is required for the Certificate in addition to the 15 credits of course work. However, students who signed up for the Certificate program prior to Spring 1996 "grandfather" from the project report requirement.

We encourage all practicing engineers to enroll in the Certificate Program. It doesn't matter if applicants have been out of college 5, 15, or 25 years --- we have interesting things for interested applicants. If applicants have the experience, and a desire to learn more in construction in this competitive world, they are eligible candidates.

To earn the certificate, it is necessary to have a B average.

Admission is open to students having a bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or business. Other bachelor degrees can be potentially considered on a case by case basis.

The prerequisites for the certificate program are:

  1. CE 375
  2. CE 472

Restrictions apply in transferring credits and prerequisites to the M.S. program in Civil Engineering.

Students can take from one semester to seven years to get their Certificate.
