Pi Tau Sigma Information:

Dr. Hihara pledged for Pi Tau Sigma at the Hawaii Chapter in 1981. Although he had no set pledge project, he did complete the standard Pi Tau Key.

Work Experience:

Research Assistant, MIT, 1983-1989
Teaching Assistant, MIT, 1983-1989

Hobbies:

Dr. Hihara enjoys golfing, photography, and raising tropical fish.

Research Interests:

Corrosion behavior of metal-matrix composites (MMCs) such as SiC/Mg, SiC/Ti, and Si/Al are studied in aqueous and atmospheric environments. Ceramic fibers or particles that are used to reinforce MMCs may have significant effects on corrosion behavior. Electromechanical machining of MMCs are also under investigation. Thin ceramic films using the sol-gel method are being developed and studied for corrosion barriers on metal substrates. Other interests are the adsorption of ions on metal surfaces and the scanning-vibrating electrode technique for localized corrosion and modeling.

Selected Publications:

Courses Taught:

Materials Science; Corrosion Engineering; Component Design; Materials Selection for Design; Machine Design; Fundamentals of Electrochemistry; Advanced Topics in Mechanical Engineering
