C. S. Papacostas and P. D. Prevedouros. TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING AND PLANNING. Third edition. Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., 2001 Selected by Hawaii Reporter as one of the 50 people who made a difference in Hawaii in 2003. Included among the 30 heros of Hawaii in 2007 due to extensive volunteer efforts to improve transportation policy and provide affordable ideas for congestion relief on Oahu.
The only major solution to Honolulu's traffic congestion on the leeward corridor is a 2- or 3-lane reversible High Occupancy and Toll (HOT) Expressway with ramps to and from: H-1 Freeway, H-2 Freeway, Kamehameha Highway and Farrington Highway at the west end, then ramps in Aiea, Pearl Harbor, Aloha Stadium, Lagoon Drive, Waiakamilo Street and Nimitz Highway in Iwilei, as well as a left turn underpass from Nimitz Highway to Alakea Street. This picture demonstrates the flexibility and multiple utility of the facility to handle directional, imbalanced and emergency traffic flows. Visited Tampa's reversible expressway lanes (REL) in July 2007. REL is a relatively inexpensive and common sense approach to solving traffic congestion during peak periods. This slideshow presents most of the features of the REL project which fits Honolulu like a glove! |
