About Ben Yoshino

My Name in Kanji (It says, "Ben, Yoshino Yoshinori")

Here's a few bits and pieces of information about me, but there isn't really a great deal to say about myself... I was in graduate school for a long time, let's just say it took too long to pick a topic that was appropriate. (You can ask my former advisor, Dr. Tep Dobry all about the trials and tribulations of my thesis...) Now that I've finished, I'm still here, in fact, still here at UH, working. I enjoy working here in Hawai`i, even if we have the occasional Hurricane to worry about.

One word of warning to those of you thinking of graduate school: It always takes longer than you expect to write a thesis, especially if you TA the EE 150 course. (Freshman C language programming.)

Now, let's see how to describe myself... I'm a 31 year-old American of Japanese Ancestry, born and raised in Japan. I moved to Hawai`i when I was 16. (Maui, to be specific.) I graduated from Lahainaluna High School in Lahaina, Maui in 1986. I've been at UH since, and I received my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in the Fall of 1990, and Master of Science in EE during the Summer of 1994. I'm glad to say that school is all over! (?)

During my years as a student at UH, I have been actively involved with a few student organizations. During my sophomore year (1987-1988), I was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, a Freshman Honorary Society. In my Junior year (1988-1989), I pledged for Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the Electrical Engineering Honorary Society. I've been a Bridge Correspondent (a fancy name for historian), Pledge Master, President, and Treasurer during my active years. (And boy, was I tired!) In addition to being an active member in HKN, I was also involved with the college as an EE Peer Counselor. We helped several incoming students (freshmen, mostly) get the grips on University life, and did other things to help the dean's office. One summer (Summer 1989), I was a TA for the SPEBE (The Summer Program for Enhancement of Basic Education) Engineering program. I think that I just did too much, or people have become more apathetic in these times.

Some of the things I enjoy are tennis, swimming, ice skating, some rollerblading and of course, video/computer games... Oh, and I like learning languages, when I have time. I'm fluent in Japanese, and I guess I can speak English. I've taken German class here at UH (no, that's not Houston that's Hawai`i, in case you're from Texas) and I'm currently taking intermediate Korean class. I also hope to possibly take some Chinese courses, too... (Greedy, huh?)

All-in-all, I guess I can say that people come to me when they have pressing Unix(tm) problems. I also write various useful (?) programs and tutorials... If you would like to see a tutorial for something (that I know how to use) make sure to drop me a line via email at the address below.

Of, if you prefer, here is my snail mail address:
