Ben's Comments about Holmes Hall

Holmes Hall
2540 Dole Street
Honolulu HI 96822

I've been in the College of Engineering for over 8 years now, and I've seen many things happen in and around the building... I think the most intriguing is the fact that Holmes Hall has two huge holes in the middle... Kinda like a square figure-8. I guess they intended those holes for aesthetics, but to me, it feels like a lot of wasted space.

Recently, I noticed the Civil Engineering Honor Society, Chi Epsilon, making benches in the middle of these "holes". I guess that's one way to use that extra space. Unfortunately, for me, being an EE, I have no way to fill anything in that hole... (Those of us in the Computer Track of Electrical Engineering are usually stuck with things that aren't so big or visible.) At any rate, this building has many memories, and to me, Holmes is a second home.

I remember days back when I pledged for Eta Kappa Nu, (that's the Electrical Engineering Honor Society) my pledge group used to stay in Holmes Hall day and night during the whole spring break, trying to get our project to work. I still remember that Friday night before judging when I wiped out on my now-long-gone moped... OUCH! Although we were pretty much worn out, because the project kinda worked we felt it was a worthwhile cause. (Understandably, our pledge group didn't win any prizes, and when I took subsequent courses in EE, I found several design flaws in our pledge project.)

I think being active in student organizations is a big plus for any engineering student, whether one is an undergraduate or graduate student. By working together with others, and tackling difficult tasks, one can see the results of hard work achieved by teamwork. Club events and club activities do further enhance your enjoyment of your time here at the College of Engineering.

You get to make new friends too, and I guess they also provide motivation indirectly through competition. I seem to have diverged from my original intent in creating this document, but my main point as students of the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii, one should learn to work to make the College better. (That statement applies wherever you hold dear to your heart... Try to make a difference to be recognized. The hard work really IS worth it.)

(IS this really about Holmes Hall???) Ah -- another rambling page.

Please send me comments. I really want to know what you think of my "work" here.
