FACT SHEET
The University of Hawai‘i College of Engineering Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is the local collegiate chapter of a not-for-profit national organization dedicated to empowering women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering.

Nationally, SWE is 14,000 members strong with over 70 local sections and 277 student sections throughout the world.

In 2004, the Hawai‘i SWE Collegiate Chapter was revived after a 10-year hiatus. SWE Hawai‘i has since been recognized with national awards every year, including

2009: Outstanding Collegiate Section - Silver Level

2008: Outstanding Collegiate Section - Silver Level

2007: Strategic Communications Awards - Collegiate Best Section Web Site 3rd Place

2006: Outstanding Collegiate Section - Small Section 3rd Place

2005: Outstanding Collegiate Section - Small Section 2nd Place.

Today, SWE Hawai‘i Collegiate Section is the largest and fastest growing student chapter at the UHM College of Engineering. The SWE Hawai‘i Collegiate Section is open to all students interested in engineering who are enrolled in the University of Hawai‘i system, regardless of gender, ethnicity or age. There are currently over seventy registered SWE Hawai‘i members, including undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs from:

• Civil Engineering (CE, CEE)
• Electrical Engineering (EE)
• Mechanical Engineering (ME)
• Bioengineering (BE)
• Ocean Resources Engineering
• Info & Computer Sciences (ICS)
• Mathematics
• Physics
• Astronomy/Astrophysics
• Chemistry

Members benefit from peer mentoring, attending workshops to build career and leadership skills, participating in outreach activities and social networking, meeting industry professionals and having access to local, national and international resources.

Recent events hosted by SWE Hawaii include “Speed Networking” at UH Manoa (http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/college-events/09-swe-speed-networking/?searchterm=speed%20networking), and “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at Kealakehe High School in Kona, Hawaii (http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/college-events/2009-iged/).
