Connecting to Wiliki via Modem

The University of Hawaii-ITS modem pool has 250 lines and can connect up to 28.8kb/s.  Dial-up connections on your computer must be configured for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) for internet access.

For detail instructions on installing and configuring dial-up connections for Microsoft windows and the Macintosh, follow the steps documented by UH-ITS and Microsoft.

After dial-up networking has been installed and configured, startup a dialup connection. You will be prompted to enter your ITS username and password.  After a connection has been established, you can browse the internet using web broswers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox.   At the same time, you can connect to Wiliki by running Secure Shell (SSH).   The PC version of SSH that can be obtained from http://www.hawaii.edu/help/software/pc/ssh.html.   The latest version of MacOS X includes a version of SSH.

E-mail - Ways to read your Wiliki Email

  • Pine and ELM are email programs on Wiliki.
    You may access these applications after you ssh to wiliki by typing, "pine" or "elm" on your unix shell prompt. The disadvantage of elm is that it is not able display any e-mail attachments. These email programs only display the text content of messages.

  • Forwarding your wiliki email to UH-ITS
    ITS has a web email server which can be access on the internet. Your ITS email address must be in your ".forward" file on Wiliki to forward your email from Wiliki to ITS. To edit your .forward file, login to wiliki using SSH, and after the shell prompt is displayed, type "pico .forward" and enter your ITS email address. When you are done, press control-x to exit, reply "y" for yes to save and enter. The URL for UH-ITS Web Mail is "https://mail.hawaii.edu/". The advantage of web mail is that you can access your email anywhere with internet access.

  • Thunderbird, Outlook, and Eudora
    You must forward your e-mail to ITS to be able to use these e-mail applications. See http://www.hawaii.edu/infotech/email.html) for more information.

After completing your work you should log out and hang up by either turning the modem off or sending a command to hang up the modem.
