Anonymous FTP

Computer Facility University of Hawaii at Manoa

Many sites support ftp logins that do not require accounts. These sites usually hold archives of programs, images, and sounds.

When you log into an anonymous FTP Site, your "login ID" is "anonymous". When it prompts you for a password, usually the expected response is your email address. (This is to ensure that the adminstrators of the site have an idea of who is using their service.)

Some useful anonymous ftp sites

(There is a larger list of anonymous ftp sites in the directory, /soft/cf/soft/internet. If you are interested, check the contents of those files.)

wuarchive.wustl.edu

Rules for anonymous ftp

  • Never enter a system where you have no permission
  • Keep your file copying to off-hours at the site (avoid business hours 9:00 am to 5:00 pm)
  • If the ftp site seems slow, give up and try again later
