Web Browsers

Of the several browsers used on the World-Wide Web, Netscape is one of the more popularly used browsers. Mosaic was the previous popular browser used widely until Netscape Communications Corporation was established by the very people who wrote those first versions of Mosaic. Development of Mosaic began at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Versions of Mosaic are still in the works there, but much of the excitement of the Web has gone commercial, and Netscape has gained a wide popularity.

Now somewhat seldom used but still worthy of mention here is the Lynx browser, which does not provide a graphical interface, but is used in environments in which only text-based information can be displayed.

The version of HTML given in this tutorial is based on HTML 3.2, which has been widely accepted by the internet community as a stable standard. In addition to the tags given in the standard, Netscape adds its own tags. Many web page authors have adopted some of these so-called Netscapisms which may not be properly displayed by those browsers which do not understand Netscape HTML additions.
